Infraestructure

SMALL ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Modern facilities, distributed on three floors, include seven wards for clinical veterinary procedures in addition to one ward used for ophthalmology procedures, one for cardiology and electrocardiology, one for ultrasound, two for infectology, one for oncologic, one for physiotherapy and acupuncture, and one ward specific for felines. Three routine surgery theaters are available, as well as a room for sugery classes and one for technical surgery classes (this is equipped with an up-to-date CCTV system for remote viewing in the auditorium). Apart from these, the facilities include room where anesthetics are prepared, one where anasthesia is administered, one dedicated for post-anesthesia recovery, in addition to the required locker rooms. We also have modern X ray equipment and veterinary clincal pathology laboratories to carry out diagnossis procedures using automatic equipment. The Veterinary Pathologic Anatomy Ward underwent a full modernization refurbishing initiative included in an official procurement procedure by CT-infra-FINEP. Histology, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and necropsy laboratories were totally refurbished considering current biosecurity regulations

LARGE ANIMAL HOSPITAL

The large animal hospital is in the Cachoeiras de Macacu Teaching Farm, and provides veterinary health services to large animias. The facility includes corrals and pens to handle bovines, pigs, ovines, and rabbits. The Teaching Farm also has a laboratory where physiopathology studies about pain and studies about stem cell treatments and biomaterials are carried out under the supervision of the professors at the Antônio Pedro University Hospital (for humans), Pro-cardiac Institute, Traumatology and Orthopedics Instiute (INTO), Brazilian Center for Physical Reseach (CBPF), and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

RESEARCH LABORATORIES IN THE NITEROI CENTERS

Currently we have specific facilities in Niteroi, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Veterinary College, in Vital Brazil) and Biomedics Institute (in downtown). The facilities include two surgery rooms for small animals, three general health services rooms, one X-ray room, one clinical pathology room, (which includes a room for biochemical investigations, one for hematological investigations, as well as a informatics room), one parasitic disease room, and one classroom. Several laboratories are operational, namely one for virology, three for bacteriology, one for statistics, one for histopathology, one for embryo, one for andrology and endochrinology, one for gynecology and obstetrics, one for animal cytogenetics, one for pathological anatomy, and one for aquatic organisms studies. The Teaching Farm also has facilities that are fully equipped to carry out practical .

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY LABORATORY, BIOMEDICAL INSTITUTE

At the moment the Veterinary Medicine Post-graduation Program has two Molecular Biology laboratories and one Microbiology and Immunology laboratory.

This laboratory is being assembled with the resources granted by CNPq and FAPERJ calls.

STATISTICS LABORATORY

Currentl the Veterinary Medicine Post-graduation Program has a statistics laboratory equipped with six computers and dedicated software. In addition, a partnership with other statistics laboratories in the Mathematics College, UFF.

TEACHING FARM IN CACHOEIRAS DE MACACU

The Teaching Farm of the Veterinary College of Fluminense Federal University is located in the city of Macacu, 80 km away from Niteroi, and covers an area of 180 ha. The Teaching Farm in Cachoeiras de Macacu (FECM) of Veterinary College of Fluminense Federal University has been operating for 25 years. Its main purpose is to be the site of Teaching, Research, and Extension Studies. Its mission is to afford opportunities to teach undergradautes and post-graduation students. In that aim, FECM has lodging facilities, a canteen, laboratories, a conference auditorium, a barn for the handling of large animals as well as animals from other sectors, like rabbits, swine, and sheep. Recently the Dairy Cattle Unit started operations, where 300 liters of milk are produced daily, part of which is processed for consumption by UFF students in Niteroi. FECM has an Animal Research Laboratory that has formed partnerships with various institutions, promoting numerous experiments in Biomaterials and Animal Reproduction.

EXPERIMENTAL CENTER, IGUABA GRANDE (NEIG)

The experimental center of Iguaba Brande, Veterinary College (NEIF-UFF) was established in 1960, after a donation of the area by President Juscelino Kubitschek. The aim was to serve as a teaching farm of the Veterinary College of UFF. It is located in the city of Iguaba Grande, on the banks of Araruama Lagoon, 135 km away from Niteroi, along Amaral Peixoto highway. The paradisiacal location covers an area of 95 ha, with 154,000 sq meters dedicated to research on environmental projects aimed to aquatic and terrestrial species preservation as well as native vegetation. The site has a continued education center and lodging for long-span research on wild animals and reproduction of aquatic species.

LIBRARY

The library of the Veterinary College is equipped with a computer network connected to the Internet available to connect users with the major bibliography informatin centers. In addition, the Library has subscriptions of several scientific indexes and journals, both Brazilian and international, some of which are shared with the Brazilian Veterinary Sciences Journal, published by the Veterinary College of UFF. We subscribes VET-CD, ZOOLOGICAL RECORDS CD, among others, including the CAPES Journal Portal, which is widely used. The Library of the Veterinary College is divided in sectors and has a considerable number of books. The installation of fiber optics, also available in the library and in the research laboratories of the Veterinary College is useful in the conduction of literature reviews, and affords to keep data updated, helping students to keep in touch with international research centers. The journal portal enables fast and efficient searches. The post-graduate students have access to the collection kept at the Library of Veterinary College, as well as to the libraries of the Biomedical Institute, the Antônio Pedro University Hospital, and the Biology Institute of Fluminense Federal University, in addition to CDs for bibliographic surveys in a system shared with COMUT and BIREME, with an interconnected network.
