The Graduate Program in Veterinary Medicine (Animal Clinics and Reproduction), based on its 2021 Strategic Planning, decided to organize and support the extension activities developed within the scope of PPG.
Between 2021 and 2024, PPG teachers developed 50 extension actions. These actions can be consulted on the website of our Office the Vice President for Extension (https://www.extensao.uff.br/), where information such as objectives and a summary of Extension Actions are made available.
These extension activities are developed with the participation of our students, where the proposals for the actions are often carried out based on their dissertation and thesis work. These actions aim to allow our students to transmit the knowledge generated in our laboratories to society. On the other hand, this contact with society allows the prospecting of society’s needs and thus allows the development of new research projects.
In this sense, to train a workforce concerned with the demands of the society in which they are inserted, in 2022 the mandatory subject Extension – Veterinary Medicine and Society was created. The subject with a workload of 30 hours aims to teach students Brazilian legislation regarding extension, as well as concepts in university extension. An overview of the extension at the Fluminense Federal University is also presented. Students are guided in the process of preparing an extension action. They are subsequently accompanied in the process of preparing the extension activity. In the subject, the student presents a product developed by him/her, often related to his/her master’s or doctoral work.
Regarding the financing of Extension Actions, the Office of the Vice President for Extension in the years 2022 and 2024 launched notices for financing extension actions developed within the scope of our University. Several PPG professors had their actions financed by Proex.
In 2024, PPG in Veterinary Medicine (Animal Clinics and Reproduction) participated in the proposal that was sent and approved by Capes in the Higher Education Extension Program in Graduate Studies (PROEXT-PG). Therefore, seven PPG extension actions are receiving resources for the development of their extension actions.
The products of our extension actions are available in the University’s Institutional Repository and can be consulted at ((https://app.uff.br/riuff/handle/1/14285).
